ABOUT ME

Husband, father, academic, adventurer.

Those are the four "abouts" I gave myself on my AirBnB when my wife said a profile would help with the booking process. There is not any particular ordering to those four, but they do pretty much define me.

I've been married since '08 and together with my wife since '01. She challenges me everyday, and I'm not sure how I tricked her into marrying me, but it involves traffic and the rest I'll tell you over beer.

We have two awesome kids, and like most people, we make it up as we go along. Being a father has been an awesome adventure.

I have been faculty at Lincoln University since the Fall 2005 semester when I was an adjunct. Since then I have been a lecturer, a visiting lecturer, and now I am a tenured assistant professor. I have also served as the Director of Basic Writing and am now the Composition Coordinator, a title equal to the Writing Program Administrator who is responsible for the first year composition program in the Department of Languages and Literature.

My academic focus is within the field of Rhetoric and Composition. I study the teaching and learning of composition at the college level with an emphasis on assessment of both writers and composition programs. I am also interested in writing pedagogy, writing in the disciplines, writing across the curriculum, developmental writing, and writing centers--pretty much anything with "writing" in the title. Oh, and writing is hardest thing I do besides parenting.

My background in writing as well as literature studies has been greatly influenced by narrative. I love a good story. This affection has carried into my work as a qualitative researcher, gravitating toward narrative research and writing styles. While I have dabbled in fiction writing, non-fiction writing including narratives, essays, newspaper and magazine articles have been the primary products I manage to eke out.

All of this falls under the umbrella of "Adventurer." I travel some, but maybe not in the typical, Captain Cook use of the word. Adventure to me is an approach to life-an openness to the day with the knowledge of experience. Plus I like to get outside and play in the woods.
